The Journal of Dental Hygiene (JDH) is the premier, peer-reviewed scientific research publication of the ADHA. Published bi-monthly online, each issue offers readers articles that support evidence-based treatment decisions and so much more.
The JDH’s Editorial Advisory Board and JDH Reviewers are nationally and internationally recognized content experts and researchers in the dental hygiene profession, as well as experts from dentistry, physical therapy, nursing and public health. Archived articles are available for review, but only ADHA members and paid subscribers have exclusive access to the last 24 months of JDH research and content.
Ready To Submit A Manuscript?
The Journal of Dental Hygiene welcomes submissions of original manuscripts related to dental hygiene research, education, and evidence-based practice that supports the National Dental Hygiene Research Agenda (NDHRA). The goal is to develop and share a unique body of dental hygiene knowledge through scientific inquiry in basic, behavioral, clinical, and translational research.
All submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed for quality, depth and significance of the research. Writing should demonstrate your expertise and a comprehensive evaluation of the subject matter. Manuscripts must also provide new information that is relevant and important to the dental hygiene community.
Manuscripts In The Making
Manuscripts must be original and owned by the author/co-authors, unpublished and not submitted elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use any materials (tables, charts, figures and photographs) that they do not own. Written permission must be obtained from the copyright owner prior to publication. The JDH discourages submitting more than one manuscript on related aspects of the same research study. If multiple papers are submitted from the same study, significant differences must be evident.
All authors and co-authors of accepted manuscripts must be able to specify how they contributed to:
- Bringing the material to life and the source of analysis and data for the work
- Writing and revising it critically for important intellectual content
- Gave final approval of the version to be published
- Being accountable for all aspects of the work
Authors must disclose any perceived or real conflicts of interest that could influence the interpretation of the information presented within the manuscript. All sources of research funding, including grant identification numbers, must be disclosed.
Be sure to include a cover letter stating that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently being considered by another publication. Authors need to identify how their manuscript fits into the conceptual research model of the NDHRA. The roles of the various co-authors should also be identified in the cover letter. From there, the Managing Editor will screen all submissions initially to determine if the manuscript fits the JDH’s statement of purpose and submission requirements. If your manuscript is accepted for consideration it will begin the peer-review process. If you do not agree with the review or acceptance process as the author, you have the right to appeal. Submit any emails to the Managing Editor, Catherine K. Draper, RDH, MS, FADHA at [email protected].
Before submitting, explore a complete list of categories including: Original Research Studies and Literature Reviews with suggested word counts, preparation and style. You can also find an author submission checklist, copyright transfer and more in the JDH’s Author Information & Guidelines and JDH Ethics Policy.
