State and Local Health Programs

In order to learn about existing oral health programs within state and local health agencies, as well as how dental hygienists might contribute to their success, internet sites offer much information, including links to a range of sources and materials.

The website of the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors may be particularly helpful.

Clicking on “State Programs” allows access to information for each specific state—including contact information for the state dental director, as well as links to data, program descriptions, and state specific reports (e.g., state oral health plans, Head Start oral health forum reports). State oral health personnel usually can provide contacts for local programs within the state.

Other materials on the ASTDD site that may prove useful:

- Proven and Promising Best Practices for State and Community Oral Health Programs
- Oral Health Basic Screening Survey Tool

Existing state-specific data can be accessed through:
National Oral Health Surveillance System
Geospatial Data Warehouse

In planning for a public health program, the first step always is contacting the state or local dental program office, to ensure that all efforts address existing priorities within the agency’s health plan and contribute to its objectives.
