ADHA Announces Recipient of 2011 Irene Newman Award sponsored by Colgate—Vickie Kimbrough-Walls, RDH, MBA

CHICAGO, July 6, 2011—The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) has named Vickie Kimbrough-Walls, RDH, MBA of Sparks, Nev., as the recipient of Irene Newman Award. She was honored during the Plenary Session at ADHA’s 88th Annual Session in Nashville, Tenn. on June 18.

Kimbrough-Walls works as a program director at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nev., where she has worked since 2005. She began her dental career in 1968 as a Red Cross volunteer at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. She transitioned to private practice as a chairside assistant and moved into various positions of the practice for 20 years. Kimbrough-Walls became a registered dental assistant in 1979, and then earned an associate of science degree in dental hygiene from Cherritos College in 1993. She holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Cal-State University which she acquired in 1991. In 2000, Kimbrough-Walls earned a master’s in business administration from University of Phoenix in Bakersfield, Cali. She is pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Nevada in Reno, and expects to graduate in May 2012.

Kimbrough-Walls has been a member of ADHA since 1991, and held various leadership positions both as a student and professional dental hygienist, including serving as president of the Kern County Dental Hygiene Society (1996-1997) and president of the California Dental Hygienists’ Association (2001-2002). She also served as a trustee of the Nevada Dental Hygienists’ Association from 2007 to 2009.

Sponsored by Colgate, this award recognizes a current ADHA member who has been involved with ADHA for at least 15 years and who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in advancing the art and science of dental hygiene. The recipient participated within her community or social service organization and was nominated by an active ADHA member.
