ADHA Announces Recipient of 2011 Student Member Community Service Award—Western Technology Center—Distance Site (University of Oklahoma)
CHICAGO, July 6, 2011—The American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) has named Western Technology Center—Distance Site (University of Oklahoma) of Weatherford, Okla., as the recipient of the Student Member Community Service Award. The students were honored during the Plenary Session at ADHA’s 88th Annual Session in Nashville, Tenn. on June 18, and Kenlee Free accepted the award on their behalf.
The Western Technology Center ADHA Student Chapter is honored this year for their participation in Give Kids a Smile Day, which provided dental health services to elementary students in the community. Close to 300 elementary students received dental screenings. Of the children screened, 44 children were referred to a dentist with carious lesions diagnoses, and 80 percent of the children that needed sealants were provided sealants. All 300 students were instructed in good brushing and flossing techniques using various hands-on learning stations and interactive components. Close to $20,000 of dental services were provided. As the Give Kids a Smile Day enters its third year, the Western Technology Center Student Chapter hopes to expand the program to include additional students and grade levels.
Sponsored by Colgate, this award recognizes an outstanding student chapter of ADHA that has made a significant contribution to the community. At least 90 percent of an institution’s dental hygiene class must be student members of ADHA for the chapter to be eligible for consideration.
ADHA is the largest national organization representing the professional interests of more than 150,000 dental hygienists across the country.
