Why is it being published online without a print
version?
An increasing number of professional journals are being published
online. In fact, ADHA is on the leading edge of the trend for previously
printed scientific journals to move to an exclusively online format.
As ADHA remains among the leading health associations providing
superior services to its members, this format will enhance ADHA’s
image as a progressive organization that is willing to change with
the needs of the member majority.
This transition will also offer ADHA and
the Journal positive exposure and recognition as it will
be listed among online medical and health journals in highly reputable
online research depositories throughout the world, such as PubMed
Central. The online format offers unparalleled search capabilities
that bring significant advantages to Journal readers—including
practitioners, educators, researchers, and students. Online publication
will also help ADHA provide a more timely and efficient delivery
of relevant professional information and evidenced-based dental
hygiene research, which is a priority for our members.
How
does it work?
The Journal is being published in a referential database
format, which allows readers to access specific article elements,
such as headlines, abstracts, body, editorials, tables, photos,
and be linked there directly from current and archived issues simply
by clicking on a link or using the search function. A cross-reference
capability is also advantageous and allows you to link to other
referenced online journals.
Who
has access?
The Journal is available on a password-protected secure
server. ADHA members and Journal subscribers will register
with a username and password for full, unrestricted access to all
online content.
How
does the online version affect the value of the Journal,
as well as its usefulness as a research reference?
The value of the Journal, its overall substance, and the
quality of articles it publishes has not changed. The process for
accepting and publishing manuscripts has also not changed. In addition,
all scientific journals (printed or online) need to be registered
with the Library of Congress to be issued an ISSN. The ISSN (International
Standard Serial Number) is an eight-digit number that identifies
periodical publications, including electronic serials. The Journal
will continue to be issued this number. References for the Journal
should follow the standard of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
What
are the qualifications of the external vendor who
manages the online format?
Ingenta Connect, the company that hosts the Journal, is
considered one of the two “gold standard” companies
providing this service. They offer the most comprehensive collection
of academic and professional publications available for online delivery,
as well as customizable research retrieval and collection management
services. Researchers are able to search and access a broad range
of scholarly and professional research in a variety of formats.
What
other professional online journals does Ingenta Connect host?
Among the more than 29,000 publications, more than 6,000 online
journals, and approximately 17 million articles from the world’s
leading professional and scholarly publications, Ingenta Connect
currently hosts 27 online dentistry journals in addition to the
Journal. A few examples include the Journal of the American
Dental Association, Clinical Orthodontics and Research,
Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, Endodontic
Topics, International Journal of Dental Hygiene, and
Journal of Periodontal Research.
Additionally, to demonstrate the depth and
breadth of health-related professional online journals, Ingenta
also hosts 147 public health-related online journals, 123 general
medicine-related online journals, 76 oncology-related online journals,
and 59 cardiovascular medicine-related online journals.
I am an active ADHA
member. How do I register for access to the
Journal of Dental Hygiene online?
- Please go to www.adha.org/publications
and follow the link for the Journal of Dental Hygiene.
- Once on the main Journal page, where available issues
are listed, click on the link for “Individual Subscription
Information.”
- Now complete the form with your personal contact information.
- Please skip the field that asks for an IngentaSelectID.
- Now you will create a username and password
that you will use to gain access to all Journal content.
Please note: Your password must be unique from any other user,
so you may have to get creative. Also, the username and password
for access to the Members section of the ADHA Web site will not
work to access Journal.
- Now you will enter your subscription reference number,
which is the first three letters of your last name and the last
four digits of your ADHA member number. If your last name is Smith
and your membership number is 123456, for example, your subscription
reference number is Smi3456.
- Click “Enable Access.”
- You will be given a customer ID number. Please make a note
of this, as well as your username and password.
- Now when you want to view the Journal, just go to the
main Journal page and click on the issue you'd like to read. You'll
be shown a table of contents. When you click on an article, you'll
be asked to log in with the username and password you chose during
registration.
What do I do if I don’t
have access to the Internet?
With your username and password, you can access the Journal
from any computer with Internet access. As ADHA’s members
transition to having Internet access at their home or office, we
suggest visiting your local library, community college or university
if you currently do not have Internet access, as these facilities
typically make it available. Unfortunately, ADHA does not have the
resources to print copies of the Journal for subscribers who request
them.
I am a librarian. How
do I access the Journal of Dental Hygiene online?
If you do not subscribe to any other online publication hosted by
Ingenta, you must first register your institution with Ingenta.
You may register for access by IP address range and/or by username
and password. To register, please go to www.ingentaconnect.com/register/institutional
and follow the directions. You will also choose an administrator
username and password to manage your subscriptions.
To request access to the Journal after you have successfully
registered, continue to set up your subscriptions. Select American
Dental Hygienists' Association/Journal of Dental Hygiene
from the list of publications, and enter your subscription reference
number.
How do I find my Subscription
Reference Number?
This is a combination of the first three letters of your last name
and the last four digits of your ADHA member number. If your last
name is Smith and your membership number is 123456, for example,
your subscription reference number is Smi3456.
If you are an institutional subscriber to the Journal,
your reference number is the first three letters of your college
or library name, plus the last four digits of your subscriber number.
For example, if your institution is University Library, with subscription
number 123456, your subscription reference number would be Uni3456.
I have already registered,
but I forget my username and/or password.
If you forget your username or password, just go to the “lost
password” link on the log-in page to receive an email reminder.
You will be asked for one of the following: the email address you
provided during registration, your customer ID number, or your username.
How will I know when
new issues are made available?
After you have activated your registration, you should sign up for
the Table of Contents Alert. When new issues are available online
for viewing and downloading, you will receive an email notification.
Just click on the “Table of Contents Alerting” link
on the main Journal page and enter your full name and email
address.
Can you achieve a
quality appearance when printing the articles?
The articles are available for viewing and printing in either HTML
(Web page) or PDF format. For a high-quality print result that appears
like a page out of a textbook, request the PDF format and click
on the print icon within the Journal browser. Please note
that selecting “Print” from your Internet browser will
not work. You can also save the articles to your hard drive for
use while you’re not online.
How do I search the
Journal?
From the main Journal page, click on “Search Facility.”
You can search through the Journal and other research publications
by author, abstract keywords, article title, or full text.
I still have a question
that has not been answered by this FAQ section.
