Children with Special Needs Receive Special Care through NCOHF

Brushing your teeth in the morning should come natural, but for the Palmerin girls, it can be a painful and debilitating experience.  Diana, 8, and her little sister Brenda, 6, have Epidermolysis bullosa (Eb), a severe skin condition that causes blistering and bruising throughout the body from simple rubbing sensations.  By just brushing their teeth, they can develop aching sores in their mouths, the bristles from the toothbrush abrading their delicate inner mouth tissues.

Both children are able to receive specialized oral health services from California’s Healthy Smiles of Orange County, a non-profit oral health Affiliate program of National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: America’s ToothfairyÒ (NCOHF).

“We use care when brushing now,” says Maria Palmerin about her kids’ teeth.  “The Healthy Smiles staff and dentists answered all of my questions and made our family feel really good!”

Visit www.AmericasToothfairy.org or www.ADHA.org/IOH to find out how you can help NCOHF nonprofit Affiliate centers across the country provide compassionate, comprehensive care for children from vulnerable populations – just like the Palmerin girls.
