Cost of Smoking
In these tough economic times, it may pay to have your patients calculate the cost of smoking. You can safely recommend this American Cancer Society site: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/ped_10_CigCostCalc.asp (other sites may involve advertising). Your patients can also find out how many cigarettes are consumed over a given period of time at an associated site: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/PED_10_CigCalc.asp .
Quitting smoking not only "greatly reduces serious risks to your health," but it also can greatly increase one's disposable income. Smokers in the U.S. spend nearly $50 million annually on cigarettes. How much of that money did your patient kick in? And let them know how much they can save by quitting. Also, the cost can go beyond buying a pack; see this article on the hidden costs at http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Insurance/InsureYourHealth/HighCostOfSmoking.aspx

University of New Mexico Receives 2010 ADHA Institute/NCOHF Toothfairy Grant!
Congratulations to the dental hygiene program at University of New Mexico (UNM) for being awarded the 2010 ADHA Institute/NCOHF Toothfairy Grant! UNM is the sixth program to receive funding from the ADHA Institute for Oral Health (IOH) to join the National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF) Affiliate network of nonprofit oral health partners serving our nation’s most at-risk children.
Christine Nathe, RDH, MSDH and graduate program director of the dental hygiene program at UNM, expressed the program’s gratitude by stating, “After finding out about NCOHF, the University of New Mexico, Division of Dental Hygiene, became excited to apply to be an Affiliate. NCOHF is a perfect example of a public/private partnership that works to benefit those children in need of dental care. Because of our numerous clinics here in New Mexico, which serve the underserved, we will greatly benefit from our partnership with NCOHF, and most importantly, so will our patients!”
