Judges needed for the Student Table Clinic and Research Poster Sessions at the 2010 ADHA CLL at Annual Session
Are you looking for a good opportunity to volunteer your services? Apply to be a table clinic or research poster judge at the 2010 ADHA CLL at Annual Session in Las Vegas! This annual event showcases independent research presented by undergraduate and graduate dental hygiene students and is open to hygienists, fellow students and the general public to enjoy.
You’ll note on the application that there are two opportunities listed. However, at this time we are only accepting applications for the following time slot:
Undergraduate Presentations: June 24, 2010 – 7:00am to 11:00am (luncheon to follow)
ADHA member hygienists serving as judges will evaluate the quality of presentations in both written and oral forms. You can choose either or both available sessions. You will be assigned table clinics or research posters that match your area of clinical expertise. The student presenters will be expected to be able to explain their project and answer any questions regarding their findings. All judges are invited to stay for the awards luncheon. Please submit applications via e-mail to research@adha.net.
Please consider volunteering your time as an ADHA Table Clinic/Poster Session Judge. It's a great way to support ADHA and its students!
DEADLINE EXTENDED: Submit your application by May 14, 2010!

The ADHA Institute is asking each member of ADHA to make a gift, no matter the size, so that we can continue to provide the scholarship, community service grants, research grants and fellowships that enable hygienists to advance their education and shape the communities in which we live. Our research grants provide direct funding for specific projects whose results are critical to the dental hygiene profession.
Imagine the impact if every member made a donation of as little as $10!
Visit us on the web at www.adha.org/institute and make your tax-deductable donation today of $10, $20 or whatever you can afford, to support the work of the Institute.
Cost of Smoking
In these tough economic times, it may pay to have your patients calculate the cost of smoking. You can safely recommend this American Cancer Society site: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/ped_10_CigCostCalc.asp (other sites may involve advertising). Your patients can also find out how many cigarettes are consumed over a given period of time at an associated site: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/PED_10_CigCalc.asp .
Quitting smoking not only "greatly reduces serious risks to your health," but it also can greatly increase one's disposable income. Smokers in the U.S. spend nearly $50 million annually on cigarettes. How much of that money did your patient kick in? And let them know how much they can save by quitting. Also, the cost can go beyond buying a pack; see this article on the hidden costs at http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Insurance/InsureYourHealth/HighCostOfSmoking.aspx

Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association Makes Record Donation to ADHA Institute/NCOHF Toothfairy Grant Fund!
The Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association (VDHA) demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to children’s oral health when it directed a leadership contribution of $1,000 to the ADHA Institute/NCOHF Toothfairy Grant Fund in April!
Ellen Austin-Prillaman, RDH, VDHA Immediate Past President and ADHA Head Delegate, shared the motivation behind this generous donation. “The Virginia Dental Hygienists' Association's Scholarship Fund is pleased to support National Children’s Oral Health Foundation: America's Toothfairy in our shared goal of delivering quality oral services to children.”
According to VDHA Scholarship Fund Chair, Jackie Perry, RDH, BSDH, MSDH, “The VDHA anticipates a great return from its investment made in the ADHA Institute/NCOHF Toothfairy Grant Fund, as it helps enroll dental hygiene programs into the America’s Toothfairy Affiliate network.”
Affiliate membership provides student dental hygienists and faculty with funding opportunities and technical resources to support community-based programs that reach the vulnerable populations and focus on eradicating preventable pediatric dental disease. As stated by Ms. Ellen Austin-Prillaman, “We would like to encourage other constituents and components to join us in sponsoring America's Toothfairy programs and the ADHA Institute for Oral Health Grant Fund and in promoting our national level partnership of giving children a healthy, happy smile.” Visit www.AmericasToothfairy.org or www.adha.org/ioh to join VDHA as a visionary supporter of America’s Toothfairy oral health care programs for underserved nationwide!
